Excel automatically divides values entered by 100

Michael

I have just recieved a new company laptop, our corporate
standard is MSOffice 97.
In Excel 97 wether it be a new or existing worksheet, when
I enter a value in a cell it divides it by 100.
For example, I key in 10,000, then hit enter or arrow key,
the value converts to 100, it is not a formating issue as
when I re-select the cell it also shows 100 in the data
bar.

Help,

Michael

Have you tried goint to TOOLS>OPTIONS>EDIT and checking where it says "fixed
decimal places"? If that is checked and it says 2 decimals, then that is the
cause of your problem. It has been a long time since I have seen Excel 97,
but it is probably worth a look.

Hi Michael,
A feature loved by accountants, despised by everyone else, who
get caught on this at least once, twice, three times. Nobody
wants to admit to more than that..
Tools, Options, Edit (tab), turn off Fixed Decimals option

The reason people get caught on it is they think it changes
formatting (it doesn't), nothing happens, so they think nothing
got changed. If no decimal point is entered when you enter
data then it will assume that you have the number of decimal
places specified in your options so 12345 could be
entered as 123.45 if you had 2 fixed decimal places,
or 12.345 if you had 3 decimal places. If you had -2 then
the opposite, it would be as if you typed 1234500.

Now David, you know that accountants are a large % of Excel users, and we,
uh....they, do love the feature. Don't despise it toooo much. After all, it
is not a default setting. Some nice accountant must have set it on this
poster's machine!

Alright I love the feature, just like the Caps Lock key,
and Num Lock key. And I understand the default setting for the
Num Lock key can be set in the Bios. April Fool's day is
only .262 days away for those of us that think today is Mon 2003-07-14..
And maybe switch a few keys on the people who type with three fingers.
