Excel Autorecover - Help Please

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I upgraded from my Mac Book (white) w/ Tiger to a MacBook Pro w/ Leopard and transferred all my info/applications from the old computer.

One problem I have noticed is when Excel crashes (often), my old computer would provide a recovered version of the workbook upon opening Excel... the new MacBook Pro does not do this.

The option does not exist in preferences, save... The only option that exists is 'auto save' which I have programmed to save every minute, but it doesn't even do that. So when my Excel crashes... and I open the workbook, half of my work is gone!

I have repaired permissions...
And reinstalled Office X (I have to use b/c I use budgeting software requiring macros)... but this problem persists.

Please help.

OK, I'm very confused...

The first line of your post says you're using XL04. The next-to-last
paragraph says you're using Office X instead, because you have to use
macros. FWIW, XL04 will run macros as well as or better than XLv.X.

However, neither XLv.X nor XL04 *have* AutoSave - they only have
*AutoRecover*.

IIRC, the last version to have AutoSave was the pre-OS X Excel 2001.

If autorecover is enabled, you SHOULD be getting recovered files,
assuming that the period you set in Preferences/Save has elapsed since
making any changes. If it's not, you may have problems with disk
permissions.

XL should not be crashing frequently - have you applied all the
available updates?

Part of the problem may have been the way you transferred applications -
if you used Apple's migration tool, that's very likely. One should
always install Office from the installation disk, and update by running
AutoUpdate (for Office04/08) or by downloading and applying updates from
Mactopia.

Reinstalling Office, like nearly all other applications, is almost
always a waste of time - applications just don't corrupt that frequently.

Preferences, however, do, and Office has some hidden files that won't be
deleted just by dragging the application folder to the Trash.

So if you're going to reinstall, you should always uninstall first with
the Remove Office application.

Now, given that you've already reinstalled, if you haven't done so using
Remove Office, followed by applying all the relevant updaters, and
repairing disk permissions with the Disk Utility application, you should
probably do so now.
