I am having a problem with Excel 2002 that is similar to what others have
been reporting. I am working with a 70MB workbook, and every time I try to
delete a column or sheet of the spreadsheet, Excel grinds to a halt and
declares that "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources.
Choose less data or close other applications." It then gives me the option
of continuing without undo or cancelling. If I cancel, Excel hangs up and I
have to close it. If I choose to continue without undo, I get a persistent
dialog box that says Excel does not have enough resources to complete the
task, and no matter how many times I click "OK" or try to close the dialog, a
new one pops up to replace it. This goes on forever (and hangs up the
computer in the process), or until I go into the Task Manager to kill Excel.
The workbook opens and saves without problems, and I can add columns and
sheets and equations without a problem, and all the equations work fine, so
the file is not corrupted. It is only when I try to delete columns or sheets
that I have this issue.
This problem occurs even when Excel is the only program running. I have 2GB
of memory so I don't think that's the problem.
A secondary problem is that I cannot reduce the size of this workbook
because Excel will not allow me to delete columns and sheets to reduce its
size. So now I have a workbook that can only grow larger, which guarantees
that this problem will not go away.
What is going on with Excel that it cannot handle a simple delete operation
even when told that it can proceed without undo?
