Excel Cannot complete this task with the available resources

I am trying to link multiple sheets to one particular sheet. The file is less than 35 meg and I get the above referenced error. I am running Windows 2000 on a P4 2,4 ghz with 1 gig of memory. I have another file that is close to 90 meg and works fine. The explanation for this error from the knowledge base does not apply. The error occurs when I get to 8000 rows of linking 2 columns
Any thoughts
