Excel can't find file

I had an Excel file on my desktop, but when I moved it (cut and paste,
copy and paste, or move with mouse) I get the following error (No Code)
when I try to open the file.

-'C:\file location.xls' could not be found. Please check the spelling
of the
file name and verify that the file location is correct.

If you are trying to open the file from the list of most recently used
files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed,
moved, or deleted.-

I have tried the following with no success.

1) Sometimes one of these works:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)


2) Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to
excel's
factory defaults.

3) The XLStart by default is on your PC. If you don’t show any path
in the At Startup box (or in Alternate Startup Folder in prior
versions), then somehow you’ve placed files in your XLStart folder that
don’t belong there. Do a search on your hard drive, and find XLStart,
and move the files back out of there.

4)The At Startup folder line is empty in my Options/General section
I've also made sure the Ignore other applications box is
UNCHECKED. (It was to begin.)

I've also done a Repair/Reinstall with my Office 2003 Disk.

Any Help??!!??

By double-clicking on the file, and by opening Excel first, then trying
to open the file from explorer.

I'd try those two methods once more--maybe one of them will work the second
time.

(One of them usually (not always) works.)

Maybe you can change/verify your settings manually.

I use xl2003 under winXP Home (you may want to find someone with your
configuration to verify your settings) and make a note of what you had--just in
case you have to put things back.

I started Windows Explorer
View (from the MenuBar)
File Type Tab
Scrolled down to Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (XLS)
Clicked the Advanced button

Under Actions
Open (is bolded)

When I click on Open, then the Edit button, I see this:

Action
&Open

Application used to perform action:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e

Use DDE is checked

DDE message:
[open("%1")]

Application:
Excel

DDE application Not Running:
(blank)

My settings look the same as yours. I'm running XP Professional (Afte
running with XP Home and having the same problem.)

Except for manually typing in the exact same lines you mentioned, I'
stumped at a next move.

Could it have something to do with Outlook, ActiveSync 4.2.0, or havin
created SOME of the Excel worksheets on the Desktop then trying to mov
them - hence the problem.

I wouldn't think it was Outlook. I don't know ActiveSync.

I don't have another guess.
