Excel causes an invalid page fault in module <unknown>

Hi everyone
I get this error Excel causes an invalid page fault in module <unknown>
I am using Office97 and saving to my Windows2003 server share,
permissions and all seem fine
but the problem occurs when
1)create a new file on the share and save..it will not reopen gives a crash error that i mentioned in the subject line. or it saves at first and then will not reopen
Please could you advise any solutions if anyone has encountered the same
i have tried using service release2
tried starting the same in safe mode too
