Excel cell background colours missing

When I received spreadsheets as attachments (in Outlook 2003), all of the
cell backgrounds 'not filled' even though some of them are definitely
coloured on the original that was created in Excel 2000 and forwarded to me.
Can anyone help please - I need to see the colours to understand the
spreadsheet as I receive it on a regular basis.
