Excel Charting Horizontal Values = numbers

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When creating a simple line chart, I'm unable to get the column values (i.e. months in a year...Jan, Feb) to appear. Instead numeric values appear for the horizontal axis (i.e. 1, 2, 3,....etc) instead of (Jan, Feb, Mar....).
