Excel charts don't print properly on handouts

[TC2004]

I have PP presentation with charts created in PP and some created in Excel
and copied to PP. When printing handouts the charts copied from Excel do not
print properly. The title of the slide and the bars of the chart are visible
but no detail beyond that (e.g., axis titles, axis numbers, data labels,
etc.).

What is going on and can it be fixed?

I would prefer to keep these charts in Excel, since they are more
complicated than the graphing in PP seems to be able to handle.

I am using Office 2003.
