Excel charts with patterns print as solid colours in Word

My Word document has complicated Excel bar graphs with patterns to identify
different data sets. The charts must be printed in black and white and
contain too many bars to be identified clearly by different shades of gray.
The patterns on the bars print as solid colours on both laser and bubble-jet
printers. How do I get these patterns on the bar graphs to show on the
printed document?

Update - I've discovered if I special paste the chart as a bitmap it will
print exactly as displayed on the screen. However my document will be huge.
Any suggestions to reduce size of the word document yet retain patterns in
the bar graphs?
