Excel Close box grayed out

Has anyone had a problem with excel disabling the close
box and making it save as if you use the file - exit
command?

This may be because the workbook is protected (as opposed to the worksheet being protected)
To turn it on: Tools|Protection|Protect Workbook - select the Windows checkbox. (This prevents a workbook's windows from being moved, resized, hidden, unhidden or closed.
To turn it off: Tools|Protection|Unprotect Workbook - however if it was protected with a password, you will need to enter that password to remove protection
