Excel closes when doing copy/paste.

I copied a graph from an open Excel file and pasted it to a PowerPoint file.
Just after the paste action, Excel program closes. I dont want it to close
because I need to copy other sections of this file. I am using Office XP on
an XP O/S. Sevice packs/updates are current both in O/S and Office. My
hardware is a 2.0 ghz Compaq laptop with 1gb RAM.
