Excel closes when I try to open a file

When I try to open an Excel file from a certain directory Excl closes and I
lose any changes to any Worksheets that were open at the time.

I have tried creating a new directory and copying the files to it by the
result was the same.

If I use Windows Explorer to view the directory, then double click on a
file it opens without any problem.

I am running Windows XP Pro and Excel 2000.

Can anybody help?

Try an Excel NG rather than a Word NG please.
