Excel converts a letter "L" followed by slash to a funky character in some fonts

L

lilybirchfield

I've noticed that since our most recent upgrade (to Mac OS 10.3.6 and
Excel 2004 for Mac), there is something funky going on with the forward
slash character coming after the lower case letter L. It turns into a
strange looking l with a slanted cross mark (perhaps a foreign
character?). For example "school/college" turns into "schoolcollege"
with a funky short sideways mark over the L.

This only happens with certain fonts, the one I care most about is
Palatino (preferred font of our manager).

I tried checking on my language and keyboard preferences, and it
doesn't seem to be a problem -- just plain old English and US.

Any suggestions? TIA
