The issue you're seeing is caused by an Apple bug! Please see this thread:
http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Excel/822.

We've received confirmation from Apple that this is caused by a bug in one
of their drivers. Apple is working on a fix. I can't speak for them as to
when they will release an update that fixes the problem.

Thanks,

Pat

I am trying to enter data into an excel ledger and create my own categories, but it keeps crashing every few entries. WHy? Can I do anything to fix it. I have checked and my mac is not due for any software updates.

We are aware of that problem and are working on a fix for it now. I'm not
aware of a workaround at this point.

Thanks,

Pat
