Excel crashes at startup

B

Ben

I am running 10.2.8 with Excel 10.1.5 (as part of OfficeX)
I have installed all patches I could find as of 27/5.
Everytime I try to launch Excel it get to as far as showing
me the toolbar then crashes. I have repaired permissions,
deleted preferences, cleared cashe files and ran all other
cron scripts to rebuild whereis etc.
Word and Entourage work fine but Excel and powerpoint do
the same thing. (I don't use powerpoint at all so I don't
care if it doesn't work).
Here is my crash log

The crash log won't tell anybody very much if you don't also give a lot
of detail about what exactly XL was doing at the time.

Try looking here:

You've already tried many of the steps, but you may find something that
will helpl

I was just trying to launch it. I can't do anything at all.
As soon as it starts it crashes/quits.
I have been to the sites given below, removed fonts,
preferences again, reinstalled Office, nothing in the excel
startup, removed addins, but am getting no where.

This still sounds like a corrupt font or preference. Did you *uninstall*
(using the Remove Office app) before reinstalling? Did you fix your disk
permissions? Did you're testing of the fonts per the KB article find any
corruptions?

.

I have gone through all my fonts, even used FontDoctor X to
check every font, which said every thing was OK. Deleted
all preferences that I could find for Office and Excel.
Uninstalled and deleted everything I could find releating
to Office except for my Email stuff.
I have fixed permissions, before reinstall and after install.
Word and Entourage work without a problem. Powerpoint and
Excel don't work at all. What do Excel and powerpoint share
that Word and Entourage don't use?

hard to tell. All the Office apps are really shells built on top of
common Office code. You're making a possibly unwarranted assumption that
the causes of the crashes are related. When you uninstalled, did you use
the Remove Office Application in the Value Pack folder of the install
disk?

In my limited experience, FontDoctor X saying all the fonts are OK is
not the same thing as following the troubleshooting protocol and
actually removing the fonts (with Office Apps closed and restarting
between trys). What happens when you follow that protocol?

I did try the removing of fonts, following the steps in the KB.

I didn't use the uninstall, just deleted everything. I will
try the uninstall in the value pack.
Thx

Well I was about to do a uninstall of office, when I
accidently double clicked on an Excel txt document (was
ment to open it up in word) and Excel started up OK.

I have since found out that I can get Excel to work only if
I start excel by opening a excel document. If I try and
launch excel with out a document it will crash as soon as
it starts.

I've seen this problem in two cases only so far:
- Office is not up to date to 10.1.5 (which doesn't seem to be the case for
you here)
- people have installed third party codecs (eg: old DivX codecs) that make
the Project gallery crash (just update the codecs then)

Do you still see Excel crash if the Project gallery is disabled at startup???

Sounds like your default workbook may be corrupt. Do you have a file
named "Workbook" in either your Startup folder or alternate startup
folder? If so, remove/delete them.

If not, I'd recommend you run Remove Office and reinstall.

Forgot about these... I'll put them on my troubleshooting site...

Yeah, they don;t come up that often, but I've seen the problem more than once

Will have to look into the codecs.
I didn't have a workbook, but I put one in which I just
close when Excel starts.
