Excel crashes on startup - every time

W

webweaver

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

For the past few weeks I have been unable to use Excel at all, as it crashes immediately upon startup, with the message "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

I am trying to start up by either clicking on the Excel icon in my dock, or from the Excel icon in my Applications folder. In both cases, it crashes immediately. This first started a few weeks ago, seemingly randomly. I'm not sure whether or not it was following an auto update.

In addition, Word is extremely shaky. On startup I have been getting messages about corrupted databases. These messages seem to have disappeared since I updated everything today. However, on saving/closing a file, Word also still crashes, with the same error message as I have in Excel.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.11 on a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5. Memory 1.5GB DDR SDRAM.

When this issue first arose I was using Office 2004. In an attempt to fix it we upgraded to Office 2008. We are still having the same problem.

I have:

- repaired disk permissions
- gone into ~:Library:preferences:Microsoft to remove any preferences files. There are currently none for Excel or Word, although there were some at some point. (We trashed them once before to try and get Excel working again, and they do not seem to have remade themselves. Is this odd?)
- removed all printers, added them again and updated with the appropriate printer driver update from HP (you will see from the error log that it references Crashed Module Name: PrintCore)
- made sure that I have the latest Office 2008 update installed (Office2008_en_word_12.1.0)
- made sure that I have the latest OS X 10.4 update installed (10.4.11).

Now what? Can anyone suggest what I should try next? Thanks heaps.

Here's the Excel error report:

oops I think there must be a limit on the number of characters per reply. There's a WHOLE lot more to the error report than I have been able to post so far. Please let me know if you want me to post the whole thing (it will take a few posts I think).

oh yeah - I have also disabled all of my fonts using FontBook (in case it was a corrupted font), restarted, tried to open Excel again, and it still crashes.

Could you please send the whole crash log directly to me:
(e-mail address removed)? Either me or someone on my team will follow up
directly with you to try to narrow this down.

Thanks,

Pat

Thanks SO much for your help Pat - I have sent you the error logs for both Excel and Word (same thing happening in both) by email.

I am now at the stage where I can open Excel as long as I open a file directly, as opposed to by clicking on the Excel icon, but at save/close Excel crashes and will not save the file.

A similar thing happens in Word - I can open Word by clicking on the Word icon, I can create a new document, but on save/close Word crashes and the file is not saved.

Can I just say how impressed I am that you spend time on the forums and that you do actually follow up and help those of us having issues with MS software? Thank you.

Could anyone share their solution? I am having random crashes with Excel
2004 (11.5.0) soon after starting ever since installing the latest update. I
am reluctant to just upgrade network to 2008 at the moment (this is planned
for every Mac in fall) and that might not work anyway.

If I have to remove and reinstall I will but would prefer not to take guesses.

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Is this crash happening randomly at startup? Will you send me a copy of the
complete crash log?
