excel crashes on startup... other office aps fine

I was having problems printing with excel so I ran the Office: 10.1.2,
10.1.3, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 updates. I'm running Mac OS 10.2.8. All
the office aps work except Excel. No matter how I try to start it,
the icon bounces up to 17 times, then disappears and a dialog box pops
up saying "The application Excel has unexpectedly quit. The system
and other applications have not been affected."

I have checked for DIVX Quicktime plugins, removed font folder from
System9 folder, removed Office preferences so it could recreate them,
deleted Preferences:com.microsoft.excel.plist, deleted
Preferences:microsoft:excel settings (10), checked for duplicate fonts
in the microsoft fonts folder and the library/fonts folder, repaired
disk permissions (several times). I'm running out of options (at
least the ones I am familiar with). I'm about ready to say screw it
and find a different spreadsheet program. Does anybody have any other
ideas????

Did you "repair the permissions" after having updated? It's often a good
option to try, and should be done after any installation on Mac OS X. Have
you tried to log in under a new user's identity and tested if things are
working better? That's a way to know if the problem lies somewhere in the
preferences or settings or if it's deeper in the application settings.

If this stil doesn't bring any better result, you can try running the
"Remove Office Tool" that can be found on the CD ("Value-Pack" Folder). That
will uninstall Office, then you can reinstall it from the CD and re-apply
the updates (BTW, 10.1.3 update isn't needed, as it's included in 10.1.4)

Yes, permissions were "repaired". I've tried logging in as a
different user but the same thing happens. If I uninstall office,
will that affect the two years worth of email stored in entourage or
will that leave the Microsoft User Data alone? I hate to lose all of
that. Yesterday for experimental purposes, I upgraded Office on
another computer running 10.2.8 and low and behold, the same result...
Excel doesn't work anymore. So now I have two machines with the
problem. Do you think it is a bug in the 10.1.5 upgrade package? If
I do uninstall and then reinstall Office, what upgrade should I stop
with?

I doubt it's a bug in the upgrade package - thousands of people have
upgraded without this problem (remember that only those with
problems tend to post here).

No, you won't lose anything in the MUD folder. However, if you've
got 2 years worth of email that you want to keep and don't have a
backup, you're asking for trouble.

I'd recommend you

1) save anything that you need in the Office X folder .
2) Uninstall using the Remove Office application.
2) Reinstall XL, saved items.
4) Download and install the 10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 updates. from

5) Reset permissions.

Well, whatever the heck that reply was... Someone wrote about this earlier.
The solution is to turn off the buggy Project Gallery. "How do I turn off
the PG if Excel won't open?". Open word, when the PG opens, choose new Excel
workbook. Excel will then open. Choose prefs and there's an option to turn
off for the PG on open.
