Excel crashes when saving

T

tpowers

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Power PC My students continue to have problems when saving Excel files. Roughly 25% of the students programs crash when trying to save their files. This is becoming ridiculous. I have the updated to the newest version 12.2.3 and still continues to crash. Also, we have the same problem with Word. We are on a network and we run Windows Server 2008. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom, can you please post the crash log (when crash happens, click "more information")? If you can send me ([email protected]) a copy of your crashing workbook, that would be great.

Thanks,

Are you by any chance using Pivot Tables?

Everytime I "group" in a Pivot Table, and then attempt to "Save", Excel crashes.

As long as I don't group, I can save all I want. But once I group, I'm stuck.

Hi Tom, can you please post the crash log (when crash happens, click "more information")? If you can send me ([email protected]) a copy of your crashing workbook, that would be great.

I'm no student but I am a teacher and having the same issues - when trying to save, excel crashes.

Thanks.

Hi Tom, thanks for the additional data. I did the investigation, but couldn't find much useful information. One thing I did realize is that this crash only happens on PPC. I was wondering whether the remaining 75% students whose Excel doesn't crash use Intel? To help with my further investigation, I need a crashing workbook, and detailed steps that can lead to the crasshing point. Is there a way that you can send me ([email protected]) this additional info?

Thanks,
XinXin Liu

Hi Dupin, crashes come in a lot of different ways even though they probably reveal themselves with the same operations (such as "save"). If you can provide me ([email protected]) with additional info (such as a workbook and detailed repro steps), I can investigate it.

Thanks,

I have two different workbooks that crash on me. Both are with pivot tables. After creating "groups" in the pivot tables, Excel crashes upon save.

Any ideas?

Hi Sandy, is it possible for you to send Microsoft ([email protected]) a copy of the crashing workbook with Pivot Table. I think other customers may face the same crash, and would like to investigate it.

Thanks,

Hi Sandy,
Sorry to hear you are having problems also. We are not using pivot tables, it just crashes when working on a simple spreadsheet.

I have noticed this same scenario when an .xls file has been accessed and saved over by PC users or Intel Mac users. Once their work has been saved and I attempt to resume work in the same workbook (simple files, data only, no formulas even), the following actions result in Excel crashing:

- copying cell data and pasting into a different workbook (A workaround is clicking into the cell data and copying while cell is active, but simply selecting the cell and copying doesn't work.)

- saving

- saving as...
(I tried to change the file type to .xlsx, because this once was successful and eliminated the problem, but that stopped working. Now when I attempt to Save As..., I get a "Document cannot be saved" error. This is annoying anyway, since it creates multiple documents where there should be only one.)
