Send the error report, but uncheck the box that says "Restart Excel".

Then go find that previous document and rename it.

Then start Excel, and it should be OK.

Hope this helps

seemingly i'd tried that tactic previously. Didn't try the rename, however after another 10 mins of searching various messageboards, I tried lauching Excel while holding the shift key down.

That seems to have helped.

Now the question is why can't I open this one file that contains 2 sheets and no formulas without killing Excel.

Well, if Excel launches OK while holding the Shift key down, then you have
an add-in or preference that is giving it indigestion.

If it was an add-in, you would probably know about it. Which indicates that
it's a preference.

Try going to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 and deleting the
whole folder (while all MS Applications are quit).

That should fix it: Excel will built a new set when it next launches.

Hope this helps
