Excel crashing when moving picture or trying to use comments

Whenever I try to move a picture or use the comment feature in Excel, the
program hangs completely and immediately and my machine is frozen. It looks
like this might have also damaged some of my hardware. I'm on WinXP Home SP1.
I recently reinstalled Excel with all the latest security updates.

Is there something in the security updates that is causing this problem? I
never had any trouble with my original, unupdated installation.
