Help Please!

Microsoft Excel crashes every time I launch. No other Office 2008 application crashes (or any other application). I've delete everything I could find. Did an install. Still problems. Did a remove office from the install disk. Reinstalled everything. Still same problems. See the report below.

Is OS X fully updated (10.5.6)? Have you repaired disk permissions recently?

Have you tried restarting your Mac? How are you attempting to launch - Dock
icon, application icon, file icon???

Have you re-applied all Office updates since re-installing? What happens if
you attempt to launch from a different User Account? What if you log in
while holding the Shift key?

BTW: For future reference I'd strongly suggest that you *never* take the
"Hack 'n' Hope" approach to resolving issues in OS X - regardless of
application. It not only rarely helps but it can far more likely make
matters worse & more difficult to identify & resolve.

Also, these error logs don't mean any more to the folks here than they do to
you :) They're designed for MS system engineers who don't monitor the
newsgroups. The only part that identifies anything here is the portion that
precedes "Thread 0 crashed:" & the only part of that which is of any
significance is the version number -- which should always be stated anyway.

Thanks for the input. You've helped me isolate the problem.

To answer your questions. Method of launching has not effect. I have not repaired disk permissions lately. I have reinstalled all updates. Logging in holding the shift key has no effect.

Logging in under a different user does solve the problem. There is some file in the user folder that is not deleted when removing the application. I've tried removing and launching and replacing each file related to Excel in Application Support and Preferences.

Any ideas which file this could be?

Thanks!

You're almost right about "some file" :) The fact is that there are quite a
few that don't get touched by even a proper removal & reinstallation. That's
part of why reinstalling is typically a waste of time.

It isn't clear from your response whether you've yet repaired permissions.
If not, that's the first step. Do so while no programs are running, restart
your Mac & see if that resolves the problem.

If that doesn't fix it: Make sure no Office apps are running. Go to
User/Library/Preferences & delete the file com.microsoft.Excel.plist, empty
the Trash, then try launching Excel.

If still no joy it may be a font issue so if necessary go one step deeper:
In User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 & delete the file named
Office Font Cache (12).

Can't tell you what happened but Excel is now working. Thanks for your help - Bob.
