Excel Creates .tmp file

I have a shared excel file that multiple users can access and update at the
same time. However, many times a .tmp file with a long erroneous extension
(i.e. testfile.tmp1341q98uyg). This creates problems because this file is
located on the network server and all users have a shortcut to the file on
their desktop and then they have problems opening the file because it is not
the name the shortcut is 'looking' for. This happens quite frequently.

What could the problem be?

I'd guess it was your antivirus software.

Try disabling it temporarily and see if the problem goes away.

You may want to share the name of that AV program to see if anyone using that
program has any tips.
