Excel, CRM? Can it be customer relation manager?

I have an assistant who is making calls for me. He is frustrated with Excel,
and is wondering if it can function more like a Customer Relation Management
tool and less like a spreadsheet application.

Can excel do this?

Using VBA, XL can be made to do almost anything (ok, that's a bit of
hyperbole, but...)

I would think, however, that either a dedicated CRM app, or a database
application would be a far better option.

Appended to what John suggests, here is a good list to start with:

<http://www.versiontracker.com/php/qs.php?pg=1&str=contact management&srchAr
ea=macosx&by=rating&dir=desc>
What is VBA?
Bob, the link is not connecting.

Honestly, I'm happy with Excel, buy my assistant says it's not good for
keeping track of who to call back and things like that.

I have Filmmaker, is this a CRM?

Should I explore VBA or get something better at tracking clients etc.
Thanks

Visual Basic for Applications. It's a programming language - the one
that Office macros are written in.

It is NOT a CRM application.

Works for me - make sure you're getting the entire link.

For my business, I'm OK using projects in Entourage, but needs vary.

Never heard of it, but it doesn't sound like it. Does it manage client
contacts?

A couple of my clients use Daylite

http://www.marketcircle.com/

and are very happy with it. I know nothing about it, and it's really not
something that's germane to this newsgroup.

Copy the entire link except for the beginning < and ending > and paste it
into your browser's address bar, or just go to:

http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/

And type contact management into the search field.

Do you mean FileMaker? Yes, that can be used very effectively for contact
management & is very easy to work with. Have a look here"

Don't bother with VBA - You'll be *months* learning & coding before you get
it right... And VBA is a "dead language" (although I'm sure we'll hear from
McGimpsie about that - right, John:))

FileMaker Pro 7 is all you need - I wouldn't even bother to upgrade unless
you find desirable features in the current version (9.x) - and any files you
created with 7 will still be usable if you upgrade later.

Thanks Bob, I have version 7, but I could upgrade, and will need other
copies for my assistants. Nothing has been started yet.

That said, would it be as good as a dedicated CRM program like ACT! And
others? I want to do it right
