Excel date format errors

If I enter a 2000 - 2003 date in a column, format the
cells to a mm/dd/yy format, a totally incorrect date
appears. It seems to be related to the new millenium vs.
the 1900's issue, but I don't know how to resolve it.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
