How do I chose different date formats for a column?

Select the cells then go to Format> Cells - Number - Date, If none of them
suit you select the Custom category & use the examples there to create your
own custom Date format.

On a related note, is there a way to change the default format that
Excel uses for dates. If I type "3/15/09" into a new worksheet, Excel
shows it as "15-Mar". I'd like it to show it as "3/15/09", but I can't
find anywhere to change the default.

Thanks,
aj

How about being able to enter 2008? My spreadsheet is a continuation from 2008. When I try to enter "Jan-08", it replaces is with "Jan-09".

You've probably used insert and the the today's date Date function.
which automatically updates the articular cell with the current date
opened. Or some similar date Function.

when you should formated the cell as simply date in desired format. then
typed in the desired date
