Excel date issue

When I enter dates into excel as dd/mm/yy, excel does not recognise them as a date but if I enter mm/dd/yy then excel recognises it as a date. My system prerferences are set to Region: United Kingdom and dates as 05/01/2009 ie dd/mm/yyyy.
Is there another setting in Excel that I need to change in order for Excel to recognise dates as dd/mm/yy.

Have you restarted Excel since changing your System Preferences? Excel can
only read them on launch.

Is Office fully updated? 12.1.7 is the current update level.

Restarting Excel solved the issue. I recently updated to 12.1.7 and every time I update to a new version Excel seems to default at mm/dd/yyyy even though my system preferences do not change. However, it seems that after restarting Excel my system settings take effect.

Thanks
