Excel dates import incorrectly

How can I get the Excel dates to import into Access in the date format? They
keep importing as a string of numbers (i.e. 39753 instead of 11/1/2008)

Actually, 39753 IS 01 Nov, 2008:

?Format(39753, "Short Date")
2008-11-01

Is the field in Access a Date/Time field or a numeric field?
