The story is that it was a bug in one of the early versions of Lotus 123. When
excel was developed, they decided to have the same bug.
My guess is that would make it easier to convert from Lotus 123 to Excel. I
would think that if MS didn't duplicate this error, then there would be some
people who wouldn't convert.
