Excel default workbook

How do I amend the default set-up on the workbook that
opens when I open Excel?
I can create a template "new workbook" with the defaults I
want but I have to close the "default" workbook then open
the template from the "new document" menu.
I can see the "Workbook" in the template folder but I
can't see any of its properties.
I'm using Excel 2000 with Office 2000 in the UK.
Please send suggestions to me at work, where even
the "experts" don't know the answer, at

thanking whoever in anticipation

Dee, to set a workbook up to be the default workbook try this
Set up a workbook as you want it (number of sheets, cell formats, headers,
footers, gridlines to print, etc). Now Save As, and change the file type to
"Excel Template (.xlt)" not (.xls).
Locate your XLStart folder, typically somewhere like "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart\", and save the file as book. Excel
will add the .xlt for you.

Every time you open a new workbook from now on (you may have to restart
Excel first) this template will be used. To revert back to the original,
just delete this file.
