Since installing Access 2003 Excel does not show up as a
data type in the "file/getexternal data/import" dialog
box. What do I do to add Excel as a data type for
importing data?

I don't know if 2003 has the same installation option
as '97. See my post above and do a search on your CD for
the directory VALUPACK and open the help file. If it is
the same there should be instructions for installing the
Data Access Pack.

Try re-registering the dll files like this:
Start Run
regsvr32 msexcl35.dll
regsvr32 msxbse35.dll
regsvr32 mspdox35.dll
regsvr32 mstext35.dll

Use 40 instead of 35 for A2K and 2002.

That's MSEXCL35.dll not MSEXC1.dll.

.
Save your excel file as a text file. When importing text
files you can use an import spec which is much easier to
import dat into Access
