Hullo,

I have Office 2000 Professional. I use Excel to invoice my employer.
Usually, I do this by opening a previous invoice, then changing dates,
line items, and amounts. When I try to save the file under a
different name (Save As...), I get the following error:

'Cannot open Microsoft Excel Workbook
C:\MSOFFICE\OFFICE\LIBRARY\Invdb.xls'

Once I clear the error message box, the save goes normally. When I
try to open Invdb.xls, it opens, and appears to be a template for
keeping track of invoices.

What is Excel trying to do, and how can I keep Excel happy?

Thanks in advance

Hi Dave
I can only think of 1 of 2 things here.
Either...
1. You have previously saved the spreadsheet from one of the 'default
templates which (I think you have) linked to a 'Database' calle
InvDB.xls

In theory (as I understand it), Excel is trying to save all you
invoice data as a record in this database so that you ...
a. Have a record for future reference.
b. Nex time you open the worksheet, it checks the database to get th
last used invoice number and then allocated the next consecutiv
number. (This is my assumption??)
Unfortunately, I dont know how to de-link the 2 files. Perhaps yo
could find a solution in one of the M$ white pages.

OR

2. Based on the assumption that you are oppening the spreadsheet b
doubleclicking the filename in the 'My Documents' folder. (Or somewher
else.) - If you click on the 'General' tab in the 'Options' dialogu
box, check out the path of the 'Default File Location' Field. (It'
propably pointing to 'C:\MSOFFICE\OFFICE\LIBRARY\' instead o
'C:\My_Documents

I believe your first guess is most likely correct. I did use an Excel
template to start with. Perhaps I can figure out a workaround.
Otherwise, I'll just live with it for now. Thank you for the
information.
