I don't fully understand your description, but I have to
wonder why you would open so many multiple instances of an
app? Start Excel, and then open/create as many files as you
wish to have. Instead of opening a new instance of Excel,
simply open/create another new workbook using File Open or
File; New.

Openins multiple instances of a program is memory wasteful
and causes unneccessary work for the processor to handle.

Unless I'm not understanding?

What version of Excel are you using?

If using Excel 97 or lower then open an Exploring window, such as My
Computer and go to Tools/Folder Options and on the File Types tab
locate Excel. Edit the file type and turn on "Browse in same window".

If you are using Excel 2000 or higher then please provide some
additional details such as the version you are using, patches
installed, how you are starting Excel, i.e. double-clicking workbooks,
using the Start menu, etc.

Are you looking at the Task Manager's Applications tab or its Processes tab?

When I run the bat file below, it opens the three files in a single
instance of Excel 2002 SP3 and put three buttons on Windows' Taskbar. I
have WinXp set to not group buttons on the Taskbar.

Excel and each open workbook appear on the Task Manager's Applications
tab, but Excel is listed only once on the Processes tab.

Contents of the bat file:

@echo off
start Exchanges.xls
start MyExchangeChart.xls
start FoodLog0407.xls
