Excel file deleted when PC freezes

I have had a problem with Excel XP as follows:

I have created a file in Excel and saved it to a network
drive. When I made changes the and tried to save the file
again the PC hung. After a reboot I went into the machine
and tried to open the file from a shortcut on the
desktop, Windows reported that it could not find the file.
I looked directly in the folder that the file was saved in
and it had been deleted. I had to restore from backup but
lost a days work.

Any ideas ??
