Excel file loading issue

I have Excel 2000 on Windows XP Professional. When I double click a file on my desktop, the Excel program loads but won't open the file. No error message appears. The .xls file extension default to the Excel program in the Control panel/Views. Help!

Sometimes one of these works:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)
