Excel file not opening

I have a file that I have been working on for 6+ months. The file recently will not open when I click on it. I have reverted to a back up file, which now will not open.

Additionally, excel THINKS the file is open. If I try to open the backup (with the same name) it tells me a file with that name is already open, but it does not show up on my screen.

Any thoughts as to why this happens would be greatly appreciated.

The file may be hidden. Look in the windows menu and select unhide. If the
file name appears in the windows menu, click arrange, click windows of
active document.

Why this happens is because you either saved the file as hidden, or with its
window off the screen.
