Excel File will not open

HELP!!!

After a fatal crash of my old machine, I bought a new
computer last week, pre-loaded with Windows XP.

I am familiar and comfortable with Windows 98 and have
extensively used Excel via Office 2000. now discovered I
could not access ANY files.

Office was not pre-loaded so I downloaded from my old
disk, but forgot to load the second disc.

Disc 1 was accepted with my old PID and I was able to
reconstruct my files and start to use them.

Later, looking for some clipart that was not there, I
realised that I had not loaded disc 2, so started to load
it. Error message "Incorrect PID". !!

Several tries later, I tried to start over with Disc 1,
but this NOW gave the same result. I gave up, but but
now discovered I could not access ANY files.

However, I find that the most important File, (The one
with all my current data on it) is still inaccessible.
Any attempt to open it meets with
Microsoft Windows has encountered a problem and needs to
close

Using "System Tools" "System Restore", I went back in
time, to before I had attempted to load Office disc 2 and
all seemed to be OK.

I have sent the error report (Several Times) but all I
get is advice to download the latest upgrades DONE!
with no effect.

Can Anyone tell me how to open a file which will not run
without upsetting Windows
