Excel Files Cannot be accessed

I have been having trouble opening Excel files directly on a share from an Apple Xserve since I moved from a G5 Power Mac (Tiger) to a new MacBook Pro (Leopard). I can copy to the local drive, then open, then copy back to the server, though this is not a practical solution.

I found a similar thread here, but again, no real solution:

Try disconnecting ALL your external drives, then re-connecting them under
SMB/CIFS....

No guarantees...

In addition to john's comments, make you have write permission in that
folder on the share. Excel must create a hidden file when it opens a file.
This hidden file is updated as you make changes, and is deleted when the
file closes. If you do not have permissions to create these hidden files on
the share volume, Excel can't open the file.
