Excel Files Disappearing

G

Greg McBride

I own a small advertising agency. In the past couple of weeks, one of
our workstations has had two Excel files completely disappear from the
file server. We are running OSX Server (Jaguar) and she is working on
a G4 iMac 17". She will be working on the files and saving regularly.
Then, when she closes out of Excel and goes to look for the files,
they are gone. We have searched everywhere and have even gone back
through the recent items menu item. It shows her file in the recent
items list, but then says that the file cannot be found. Has anyone
else encountered this? Any known viruses that can be causing this?
Please e-mail any ideas.

Thanks, Greg McBride

Hi Greg
You can try finding the files in /lost+found folder. This is invisible
folder

This is perplexing. If the file exists in the MRU list, it obviously was
successfully saved at some point. XL only deletes files after a
successful save - when saving, a temporary file is saved; if that's
successful, the original file is deleted; if that's successful, the
temporary file is renamed to the original).

The only place I can see that your result could happen in that sequence
is if the temporary file can't be renamed. This would be a permissions
issue on the server. You should verify that your user has permission to
rename files.
