Excel files Opening very slow (around 1 min)

Hello to all! I have problem that I am can’t success to solve:

I Have DELL D630 laptop with XP PRO SP3, & Office2003.
The problem began when Office Files opened terribly slow (around 1 minute),
even if it’s a new or empty file.

After searches in the network, I found recommendations to add to do the next
steps (to unmark the DDE from opening excel files):

1.) Open My Computer.
2.) Go to Tools -> Folder Options, and click on File Types.
3.) Find the extension of the file in question (XLS, DOC, etc.)
4.) Highlight the extension, and click \"Advanced.\"
5.) Highlight the \"Open\" Action, and click \"Edit\â€
6.) Click into the \"Application used...\" field, and scroll to the end of
the command.
7.) Put a space at the end, and type in \"%1\" (With the quotes.)
8.) Uncheck \"Use DDE.\"
9.) Click \"OK.\"

It helped and the files started to the opening quickly, but after a while I
discovered that the links & the connections between excel files stop to work:
I mean if in one excel file you writing an equal sight (=) & trying to mark
another cell in other excel file, its acting like you did nothing (the second
cell is not blinking).

Now I read about this & discovered that this DDE is responsible of the
relations between to files, so without this DDE function the connections will
not work, but if I leave the DDE working, the files will open extremely
slow…..

So now (finally) the question: Do anybody of you guys have a solution for
office slow opening without shutting down the DDE? Maybe some way to
reinstall DDE, or make it work faster or something…..? And if not maybe a way
to use other function (not DDE) to connect between files…

I will be happy to hear every advice (this is already my 5th shot to find a
solution to this problem) thank you in advance!

Well, this may be your fifth shot, but I think you'll get better results
taking a sixth shot at a Windows group. This newsgroup is for Macintosh
Excel, thus .mac in the title. Try Microsft.public.excel
