Excel files will not open from desktop

Last week the Excel files stored on my desktop began not
opening. When I click on the files I get a message
saying " cannot find the file". However, when I open
Excel program by clicking on the desktop shortcut, then
click file, then click open, then click on the same file
on the desktop, it opens very slowly. When I am online
Excel will not open at all. Any ideas on what would cause
these sudden changes?
