Excel files will open but contain no data

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I just installed Office for Mac 2008 on an iMac with Leopard. I have some files that were previously saved using OpenOffice as .xls files. Excel seems to open them with ease, but they are empty. The file name is there, and the sheet has the name of the file, but all cells are empty. Any help?
