Hi guys

We appear to have an occasionally recurrent, sometimes expensive situation developing here. What happens is this: one of our team imports a PC xls sheet into a previously Mac xls workbook. The machine will then reject any attempt to save the file - either save as, direct save, whatever. XL will do any other function EXCEPT save the file.

We've tried various workarounds, including freeing up memory, closing all other office documents, checking permissions etc. but the problem persists. Any advice?

How are the imports being done?

Are the PC-originated files on the same local hard drive?

Can the PC-file be saved with XL?

Saving problems are sometimes related to permissions issues. XL first
saves a copy of the file to the same directory as the original, then if
that's successful, it deletes the original and renames the new file. If
something interrupts this process (e.g., inability to write to a folder,
inadequate permission to delete files, etc), the process will fail.

Hi J. E.! Thank you for your help on this.

Coming back to you on your queries:

1. The PC file is imported from a customer server via Citrix. The customer operates a PC platform, whereas we are a Mac shop. So what happens is that the customer system uploads their sheet directly into our xls. To do this, Citrix saves the sheet to our "C" drive, which our Mac knows as it's local drive. We then save a copy onto our group drive.

2. Our guy imported the PC file from his local drive. We have tested opening and saving this file - doesn't seem to be a problem there.

3. The PC file is resident in the same directory as the xls that will not save.

The file saved successfully post the import of the sheet from citrix many times. Between the last successful save and the current situation, our analyst was adjusting formatting and made small changes to fomulas.

All thoughts appreciated!

FWIW...I've come across this very situation. It's as if the file
(generated from Excel-Windows) is Read-Only. However, I have found
that performing a 'Save' in Excel-Mac File menu actually does bring-up
an option box to 'Save-As'. It's just not listed as such within the
File menu.c
