excel for teacher's gradebook

I need help with if formulas for a gradebook I use with teaching. My
gradebook is set up like follows. To the left of the gradebook I have
a rubric which I use to grade. A rubric is a formula to figure out a
students final grade. Column c-f are to gather info. columns g-j
calculate the total for each catgory and column k is a sum formula for
the grade out of 100 I have no problem there. To the right of the
rubric is the daily attendance. Here is where I need help. I want to
have the ability to what I record in the gradebook under a certain date
to lower the number in colums c-f instantly. I start out all columns
in c-f with a 4 which is the highest they can recieve. My goal is to
have for example column l's info to drop column c from a 4 to a 3. I
thought it would be simple enough to use an if then formula but it does
not work. The command I want to use is ND in column l. If ND appears
then column c would minus 1.

I hope this is clear. ANy help would be a miracle and a huge time
saver.

Teacher,

I think you should not degrade pupils for attendance
problems. It is none of your business if they have
personal reasons why they can't make class. They should be
judged by their knowledge of what they learn, not being
psychically present. I am sure the rest of the readers in
this forum will agree with me 100 %.

Apparently you did not understand my thread, or I did not make it clea
enough. No one is penalized. I am a Physical Education teacher an
students grades are based on 5 different areas which go into the rubri
I discussed. This grading goes on in all types of classes. I a
interested in finding the most precise way to calculate their fina
grade. Your reply is unjustified and off the handle. They are judge
on their knowledge. However, just out of curiosity, if a student i
absent 80% of the time, should he get the same grade as astudent who i
present 100% of the time

Can you use a helper cell that refers to both column C and A?

=if($a2="nd",c2-1,c2)

If you insert a group of 4 columns, you could have one set (C-F) represent your
input. Then another set (G-J???) represent what you'll use in the rest of your
formulas.
