Excel freezes and mouse highlights all cells

After working in Excel for a period of time it freezes up and the mouse will
only highlight/unhighlight the cells. Have to use task manager to close and
then it says it can not close it then the end task window open to close it.
The PC is running Windows 98 Office 2000. Any help would be appreciated.
