Excel Freezes when opening file

Zel Dolinsky

I am using Win98SE and Excel97 on a 1 GHz machine with 128MG of memory. I
am having a problem that I have not had
in the past. Recently if I double click on an Excel file the program opens
but the file does not load and then the whole computer freezes. I can't
even use Alt-Ctrl-Del to close Excel and must turn the computer off and
start it again.. However..If I open Excel first and then open the file
everything works fine. However once the Excel file is displayed in Excel if
I try to close Excel (using the "x' key) without first closing the file the
computer freezes as above. All is well if I first close the file and then
exit Excel. Any help would be appreciated....Thanks.

Try going into Tools>options...>general and unchecking 'ignore other
applications'

Nick:

I tried this and got the following error message when I tried to open an
Excel file (when Excel was not already running)--->
"Cannot find the file <filename> (or one of its components). Make sure the
path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
However, as before all is fine if Excel is running first and then I access
the file. Thanks for any other help you can offer.........Zel
