Excel functions / "Extend List Formulas"

J

Jeff O.

Simple question... (I have Excel 2002)

I'm making a list with nothing but column headings (i.e.
no row headings). I want the list to potentially extend
indefinitely (at least until Excel runs out of rows).

In two of my columns I have formulas. I have AutoFilled
these formulas down to row 50 and then I was reading in
an Excel reference book that Excel is defaulted to extend
formulas down to the cell below if 3 of the 5 rows above
have the same formula. This can be turned on or off by
clicking Tools, Options, Edit, "Extend list formats and
formulas"

My "Extend list..." box IS checked, yet the extend
function doesn't seem to be working after I added input
data to other columns in rows 51 and 52 (beyond where I
had AutoFilled the formula). Nothing I do gives me
anything below row 50 in the formula columns unless I
manually AutoFill (i.e. "extend" the column to cells 51
and 52 manually) I must be missing something, as the
extending list action would seem to be a pretty basic
function of Excel. Anybody got any thoughts on why
my "Extend list formats and formulas" is not working?
