Excel functions not working

I have windows 98 & Excel 2000 and has worked for two
years. Now when I enter 12 x 12 it will not show 144 until
I go to file - save or the = barand left click and then
enter. The same when it come time to delete. The 12 AND
12 will shown but not the total. I have put it in a new
workbook andit works fine and then it started again. I
have no answers and I am looking for help. Galen
