Excel hangs on SAVE

I have a moderate size Excel file (5MB; 50 worksheets) which increasingly hangs when I try to save (WINXP SP2). I can't kill the processes (and, oddly, there are TWO processes with the same name) and have to hold the off button down for 7 seconds to kill my machine.
Possible clues? Seems to have happened when I got above 5MB? Could it be related to a large number (many 1000) hyperlinks (external and internal) within the spreadsheet? Gut feeling is that I've hit some limit somewhere?
