Excel hangs on startup

Excel (v10.1.4) is unusable at the moment... grrr...

Started excel... it took a long time for it to start. When it finally
came up, it opened two recovered documents. Then it hung. Tried this
a few times. Sometimes it crashes, other times I have to force quit.

I found the autosaved documents and deleted them. Then when I started
Excel, it seemed to open the saved file? I couldn't quite tell, but
it hung again. I don't really know where to go from here.

Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this? I know on Windows I
can start Excel with templates and add-ons turned off or something.
Is there something similar I can try for Mac OS X?

Thanks in advance,

Monica

Start XL with the shift key held down.
